We used to have 3 cinemas in Sitiawan back in the early 90’s. I remember one in Kg. Koh and another two in Sitiawan town itself. During my childhood, cinema wasn’t really a popular past time activity as that would explain why two of it close shop in the early 90’s itself while one still surviving with mainly indian or malay movie on 1 screen.
Since then, most of the teenagers around the town have to make a trip all the way to Ipoh (approx. 80km from Sitiawan) just to catch the latest movie as mention earlier, most of the movie on show is either indian or malay, hardly you can find chinese or english movie unless it’s blockbuster movie … and it’s after most of the main cinema pull down.
Probably I’m a bit out of date with my hometown stuff, however on 26th May 2008, the remaining one and only cinema in Sitiawan has been revive, undergo revolution to turn it into 4 screens cineplex with state-of-art sound system (ok ok la, don’t be too picky and definitely not for pro to evaluate!), Sitiawan-ese now can enjoy all the latest movie without having to travel to Ipoh anymore. The cinema might be small and simple compare to other big boy, hey, still something to be proud of for all Sitiawan-ese. Good job Lotus Five Star.
